Fondazione Prada

I recently visited this new space dedicated to contemporary art in Milan. Designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the site is located near Milan’s Lodi railway station. The venue is mainly dedicated to exhibiting the Prada family’s collections. It is housed in a former Milanese distillery from the 1910s, Società italiana Spiriti, where most of the existing structures have been preserved. The architect paid great attention to detail and, above all, to the materials used, notably the expanded aluminium walls, a material originally used for military purposes, which perfectly clad the foundation’s main building. The permanent exhibition Grotesque Process by artist Thomas Demand is quite impressive and leaves plenty of room for reflection in front of this artificial cardboard cave, created in the manner of a 3D print, layer upon layer.
The temporary exhibition highlighted the work of American artist Edward Kienholz. Recycled objects and criticism of American culture characterise the artist’s work. The centrepiece of the exhibition was undoubtedly the installation Five Car Stud, where visitors wandered through a racist scene lit only by the car lights arranged around it. Being part of this work allowed visitors to feel its full force. The only downside to the visit was access to certain rooms, particularly the Ghost House, when there were too many visitors. The 80-centimetre-wide staircases don’t help either… There is no doubt that with the opening of the tower this year, the Prada Foundation will be able to fully express its potential. I will certainly be returning myself.
